Norway & Italy 1971
After returning from school in Europe I kept telling dad that he needed to go to Norway to meet his relatives. So the very next summer the four of us traveled to Norway to meet the family over there. Mom, dad and Mary traveled separately as they could take more time. They flew from LAX to Stavanger. I traveled a few days later on a charter flight with Jill Kirby to London for $269 round trip! Then I flew to Norway to meet the folks in Kragero. We had a wonderful time visiting all the cousins and seeing all the family’s historic sites. After a time there we rented a car and drove to Sweden, then took a ferry to Denmark. Stayed in Aarhus the birth place of mom’s great-grandfather Hans Peter Jensen. Then on to Germany, Switzerland and finally Italy. From Italy we flew back to England for the final flight back to LAX.
California, Utah & Minnesota with Bjorn - 1972
During the winter of 1972 our Norwegian cousin Bjorn Halvorson Vessia came to visit. He stayed several months and worked during the week with dad at the shop. On the weekend he would join me in my social life going to the beach, going to dances, hitch hiking to Tiajuana, taking our dog, Sonja on walks! Bjorn stayed for Mary’s wedding and then he and I took off in dad’s pick-up truck and camera for a three week road trip to Minnesota. We drove to Las Vegas, St. George, Zion’s National Park, then cross-country to Minnesota staying with Harold and Sadie Running in Littlefork. We also visited Harold Lawrence and Diane Running in Duluth.
Cross-Country to Washington, D.C. - 1972
That summer I got transferred with Gruen Associates to work on a transportation corridor study for the I-95 corridor in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Consequently, I drove in the MGB with Sharon Crapo to live in Washington, D.C. while working in College Park, Maryland for a year. I loved living back there so much that I ended up working for Gruen for an additional year. Here are some of the places I visited the first year or so that I was back there.
Spain & Morocco - March 1973
One Friday at work I got a call from Donna Baxter, who I was dating, asking me if I’d like to go to Spain for a week! The boyfriend of Jesselie Barlow’s cousin, Liza worked for an international real estate firm. They had a cancellation for a week long package deal to Southern Spain and for $150 we could go flight and villa included! I, of course, jumped on the opportunity and off we went the next day to Malaga, Spain. Our villa was in a small town of Estipona. We took advantage of the close proximity for Morocco and joined to small tour group for a three day trip to Tangiers.
BYU and Project Mexico - 1975
In the fall of 1974 I traveled to Provo, Utah to do a year of prerequisite study for graduate school. I loved taking two semesters taking my prerequisites in addition to Spanish, French, photography, pottery, and archaeology. I was accepted to participate in BYU’s Project Mexico where I travelled and lived
